When visiting a church in Missouri, I was surprised to see miniature flags representing nations from all over the world displayed inside. The colourful flags from countries including Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Greece, Nepal, and Kenya provided a helpful, visual reminder that our Christian faith ultimately connects us across barriers of language, ethnicity and national allegiances.
In Genesis 15 we read that Abram was told he would be the father of many nations. Later, the apostle Paul wrote, ‘Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ’ (Philippians 3:20, NRSV). Through him we gain access to God’s eternal kingdom.
On Sunday mornings, I recall that display of flags from many nations. So, as I sing, pray and bring gifts to God, I remember that we all are brothers and sisters in Christ.
Prayer: Dear God, make us aware of the needs of Christians around the world, and help us to respond generously. Amen
